Biology Major Tracks in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences

The Tracks

Students in the Biology Major in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) can can specialize in one of four tracks. These tracks require significant introductory coursework and credits in Calculus and/or Statistics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Additional tracks are available through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Pre-Professional Track: This track is designed for students planning to enter a professional programs such as human medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry and pharmacy. This track emphasises courses in genetics, physiology, microbiology and cell biology. This track is offered through CALS and through CLAS.

Natural Science Track: This track is designed for students interested in descriptive and interpretive biology, with an emphasis on field biology.  This track  provides exposure to the major forms of flora and fauna, and integrates some of the major elements that influence flora and fauna, namely soil/water relations and human activities.

Biotechnology Track: This track is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate work in molecular biology or enter analytical and research laboratories in medical, pharmaceutical, dental, veterinary, animal, plant, microbial, and food sciences.

Applied Biology Track: This track is designed for students who are interested learning how fundamental biology is applied to solving problems. This track provides exposure to the major issues facing sustainability of human populations and natural resources.

 

Transfer Students: Transfer students must take at least three courses from the major coursework and credit hour requirements at the University of Florida as part of their Biology degree.

Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.5 upper division GPA. To graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude, a student must meet GPA and other requirements as specified by their college. Refer to the Honors in Biology page for more information.
